Teen Driver Safety Week Kicks Off in Savannah Reports The Eichholz Law Firm
Between October 20th and October 26th the state of Georgia will be working to increase teen driver safety awareness.
Established in 2007, National Teen Driver Safety Week aims to spotlight the issue of teen driver safety as motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of teen deaths. Furthermore, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about half the teens killed in car crashes were drivers.
Events being held at high schools throughout the state will allow teens to drive a simulator in extreme driving conditions, experience “drunk driving” using goggles that simulate the body/mind’s reaction to alcohol, and the chance to sign a “safe driving” pledge.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, between 2000 and 2006 more than 133,000 Georgia teens were injured in motor vehicle accidents. On average more than 3 teens died each week due to a car accident.
The Johns Creek Driving School and Drive Smart Georgia offer teen drivers and their parents the following reminders:
• During the first 500 miles teens drive they are 10 times more likely to be involved in a collision.
• When a teen earns a Class D license, during the first 6 months they are not permitted to have a passenger with them unless it is an immediate family member.
• All drivers in Georgia are prohibited from texting and driving.
• Lead by example, a teen driver is more likely to exhibit the same driving habits as their parents than those of their peers.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a teen driving accident, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical expenses, lost wages, and more.
