Guitar player’s website InfamousGuitar.com attacked by malware, recovers fully

InfamousGuitar.com, a social media site dedicated to guitar players and guitar fans, was hacked by Chinese malware on Tuesday, May 27th.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 29, 2008 ) (EMAILWIRE.COM, May 28th, 2008 ) Dallas, TX - InfamousGuitar.com, a social media site dedicated to guitar players and guitar fans, was the victim of a Chinese malware attack on Tuesday, May 27th, 2008, but recovered completely within hours.

"We began noticing that some of our database entries were a little strange, and within a few minutes, our entire site was corrupted. We immediately and voluntarily brought down our site to prevent any possible cross-infection to our members,” says John Kirkwood, Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer of Infamous Publishing. “Our first concern was for our members. We have an excellent backup system in place, so we never worried about losing data. As soon as we identified and corrected the vulnerability, we brought the site back online. I think we lost a total of 3 hours worth of data in our Guitar Forums, but that was the extent of the damage.”

“As we grow, these attacks will happen more and more frequently. Fortunately, our CTO has an extensive background in Internet security, having led the development of several critical applications for the ultra-secure Healthcare industry,” offers Sean Hansen, Co-Founder and CEO. “You would think that a site for guitar players would be a low-value target to hackers, but they’re looking for user data, credit card numbers, whatever they can get their hands on. They won’t find that kind of data in our databases, we don’t store it online. But often these hacking attempts are done just for the entertainment of the hacker, vandalism for vandalism’s sake.”

”We’re happy to have an opportunity to demonstrate our ability to respond to security threats,” says Kirkwood. “Hopefully this will serve as an example to our members and sponsors that Infamous Publishing and InfamousGuitar.com take our members’ privacy and security seriously. We’d rather take our site offline and sacrifice revenue than risk having our members’ security compromised.”

InfamousGuitar.com has just begun its first monthly guitar competition in May 2008, and has already had over a quarter of a million pages viewed on its site. Sponsors such as Dry Hill Studios (http://www.dryhillstudios.com) are supporting the efforts of musicians from around the globe. Many guitar players and fans from the now-complete 2007 Guitar Center King of the Blues competition have migrated to InfamousGuitar.com, and its membership has grown into the hundreds, primarily through word-of-mouth viral marketing. InfamousGuitar.com expects several thousand members and millions of unique visitors during its 2008-2009 Online Guitar Solo Contest.
