FEMA AWARDS ALMOST $1.8 MILLION TO CALIFORNIA FOR THE BUTLER 2 FIRE
FEMA coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror
(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 24, 2008 ) OAKLAND –The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing $1,790,640 to seventy one local fire departments through the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services for eligible costs incurred in the performance of wild land firefighting activities associated with the Butler 2 Fire near Fawnskin, Lucerne Valley and Apple Valley in San Bernardino County.
The Butler 2 Fire started on September 14, 2007, burned approximately 14,000 acres, and threatened homes and public facilities near the threatened communities. "FEMA is committed to assisting firefighters in getting them the critical resources they need to respond quickly and effectively to the unpredictability of wild fires,” said FEMA Region IX Administrator Nancy Ward.
The President’s Disaster Relief Fund financially supports the Fire Management Assistance Grant Program (FMAG) with dollars made available by FEMA to assist in fighting wild land fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. The assistance enables FEMA to provide for 75 percent of the state’s eligible wild land firefighting activities through FMAGs for managing and controlling declared fires.
The FMAG program covers eligible expenses including field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools, materials and supplies; and mobilization and demobilization activities.
