Salmonella Outbreak in Chicken Resisting Common Antibiotics
Mike Lewis attorneys reports that a salmonella outbreak has caused 278 cases of illness across 18 states, while common forms of antibiotics may not be effective.
In this outbreak, there are seven strains of which many are antibiotic resistant, according to the food safety director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington D.C.
This incident has had nearly double the hospitalizations of the normal rate for salmonella including an estimated 278 people in 18 states across the country, while there have been no deaths reported. The chickens have been linked to Foster Farms in three separate California plants, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Reports indicated that the frontline antibiotics used to treat the salmonella are effective for treating the illness, however there are some antibiotic resistant strains like this one that commonly used antibiotics may not be effective and may require stronger antibiotics to be used.
At this point no recall has been announced, while the agencies Food Safety and Inspection Service are not able to link the illnesses to a specific product or production period.
Consumers can identify if their products have come from this plant by the following codes: P6137, P6137A and P7632.
