Heirloom Seeds Our Garden Heritage YouTube Video Series By HAGA
Home and Garden America Introduces Consumer Information Video Series
The video series will be an ongoing project, growing as the company identifies new information that it can bring to the consumers of gardening products and, especially heirloom seeds.
One of the highlights of the first video in the series is the story of the Irish Potato Famine and that wiped out about 1/3 of the population. It could have been prevented if only they hadn't been depending on one strain of potatoes which developed a blight and wiped out their food supplies.
Another thing people may not know is that there are seed banks around the world that have been formed just for the purpose of keeping as many strains of heirloom seeds available as possible. And the main purpose of this practice is to prevent a repeat of the Irish Potato Famine or others like it which could be even more devastating.
"With this video series, we hope to be able to bring a fresh appreciation of non gmo, non hybrid heirloom seeds. These seeds have been carefully selected by former generations, from the finest produce from their gardens and handed down to us with the utmost of care." said Harmon.
"We don't want to be slaves of the large seed companies who sell seeds that, for the most part, won't reproduce like heirloom seeds so we become dependent on the large seed companies and must buy seeds from them year after year. With heirloom seeds we are independent and can save seeds from our own harvests to plant in the future. There is a renewed interest and a developing respect for heirloom seeds as people begin to prepare for possible, unforeseen interruptions in our food supply chain." he said.
Heirloom seeds are open pollinated, non gmo, non hybrid seeds that are hardy and will produce tasty vegetables from the home garden. The video can be accessed by going to YouTube and searching for the term "Heirloom Seeds, Our Garden Heritage."
