Shea Butter - Poisoning Or Nourishing Your Body?
Six secrets to Shea Butter
1 - The colour - Shea butter can be Ivory, off white or any shade of yellow (it is not pure white or brown) there are many myths around this question especially yellow Shea Butter because many companies add the root of the Shea tree as a 'filler' these roots are yellow and have no healing qualities but if the root is not cleaned properly, you can end up with bugs and dirt in your Shea butter. Be careful to choose wisely.
2 - Unrefined African Shea Butter - is the only one you want as unrefined means the butter has not been put through chemicals or meshes to refine it and has no chemicals added or used. Shea Butter is delicate and many of its qualities are destroyed in the production process leaving it useless (N.B. Many products contain refined/partly refined Shea butter)
3 - Shea butter can look/feel dirty - during the process of removing the Shea Butter from its nut, it can/does happen that bits of nut shell fall into the butter (these are easily removed by heating the Shea butter over a cloth to filter out those bits at home) - if you find bugs or twigs etc then consider if you want to put this impure butter on your body or hair.
4 - Shea butter will not go mouldy if it is pure - if you find mould in your Shea butter do not use it - mouldy products have a negative impact on skin and hair.
5 - Sun protection - while Shea butter is known to provide a mild form of sun protection (around SPF6) the butter itself is sensitive to ultra violet rays - always ensure your Shea Butter is packed/delivered in a UV filtered container.
6 - The smell of Shea butter - Fresh Shea butter should smell nutty, if it smells rancid then it simply is and do not use it!
Shea Butter is only as good as the quality of the product you buy - if you have tried Shea Butter before and not been impressed like the rest of us have been, one or more of the reasons above could have been the reason you weren't satisfied - like everything in life 'information is king'. However, the best Shea Butter , can be surprisingly inexpensive...
