ICC hosts Sixth Seminar of Counsel
"The seminar brought together lawyers from the ICC’s List of Counsel, representatives from international legal associations, non-governmental organisations..."
(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 16, 2008 ) Hague, Netherlands - The International Criminal Court (ICC) held its annual Sixth Seminar of Counsel at the World Forum Center in The Hague, on 12 – 13 May, 2008. The two-day seminar provided the 200 participants with an update on defence and victims issues, as well as being an important forum in which the Court was able to discuss and consult the international legal profession on the shaping of the Court’s Strategy for Counsel. The Court’s Registrar, Ms Silvana Arbia, hosted the event on behalf of the Registry.
The seminar brought together lawyers from the ICC’s List of Counsel, representatives from international legal associations, non-governmental organisations, and ad hoc tribunals who were able to address victim and defence issues from the Registry’s Victim Participation and Reparations Section, the Defence Support Section; and the Offices of Public Counsel for Victims and Defence. Debates covered a range of key challenges facing lawyers representing victims, as well as important issues relating to self-representation before international criminal jurisdictions.
Ms Fatou Bensouda, the ICC Deputy Prosecutor, opened the second day’s proceedings with a keynote speech on behalf of the Office of the Prosecutor. Further sessions focused on matters such as complementarity and the role of lawyers, as well as the Court’s Strategy for Counsel, which were discussed by a panel representing regional bar associations from the International Bar Association, International Criminal Bar, Union internationale des avocats, the Pan-African Lawyers Association, and the Japanese Federation of Bar Associations.
A further three days for training workshops has been scheduled for 14, 15 and 16 May, aimed at complementing the issues debated, including, ‘Practising before the International Criminal Court’, ‘ICC law and practice relating to victims’ and ‘Cross-examination in international criminal proceedings.’
