A glow stick is a dispensable translucent plastic tube encasing isolated chemical materials which when combined results in chemiluminescence. Glow sticks have a very wide range of application from safety and emergency, recreational activities, decorations, fishing to military applications, camping, hiking and so much more, the list is virtually endless. The glow colored glow is a result of fluorescent dying solution which is among the chemical mixture of substances inside a glow stick .Basically there are five components to a glow stick; these are:
• Hydrogen Peroxide solution.
• Plastic casing covers the inner fluid.
• A glass capsule covers the solution.
• Phenyl Oxalate and fluorescent dye solution.
• After the glass capsule is broken and the solutions mix, the glow stick glows.
So how does the chemistry occur specifically? The hydrogen peroxide reacts with the phenyl oxalate ester decomposing it to carbon dioxide which discharges energy. This energy is transferred to the molecules of the fluorescent dye making them excited. The molecules do not hold onto this energy and release it as a photon which is a packet of light. This creates the glow.
