New Study Says Savers are Sexy
New research from the University of Michigan have shown that spending and saving behaviors influence the formation of romantic relationships.
According to Jenny G. Olsen and Scott Rick in their paper, the desire to attract a romantic partner spurs conspicuous spending, but people who chronically save are more likely to attract a romantic partner than people who chronically spend.
The authors ran an experiment in which their participants had to evaluate dating profiles. When they studied the data, savers were deemed better catches. Olsen and Rick noted that savers may be viewed as having a greater financial resource and responsibility while spenders are viewed as more materialistic.
Rick said “it is notable that we observed this pattern in the shadow of the Great Recession, at a time in which chronicle spending may be viewed as irresponsible.”
However, when the Savers Are Sexy topic was posted on Reddit and several other social news and entertainment sites, the feedback was mixed. One user said “financial responsibility get my engine going… it suggests the person is most likely relatively mature and may generally be considerate. One the other side… moderation is key”.
