Carl the Bartender Robot
A small town in Germany now features a robot to tend their favorite bar
The 2.5m tall Carl is a recycled robot made from the parts of an old welding robot from KUKA, where he was first manufactured as an industrial robot, so you could say he is now in semi retirement. Carl can mix and serve cocktails as well as engage the bars customers in simple conversation to produce an ambiance that is out of this world.
Mechatronics engineer Ben Schaefer created Carl at his humanoid robots company H&S-Robots. H&S-Robots works in close collaboration with several German universities that provide the software and sensors, which bring Schaefer’s creations to life. These creations take on various applications including remotely operated exploration robots. Although not as sophisticated as tending bar, Schaefer’s other robots are outfitted with various types of sensors and cameras. They go into environments where it is difficult or dangerous for humans to go to collect data and perform other tasks.
