China Makes Large Investment for Two-year Push For High-Speed Internet
20Mbps in urban areas, while 4Mbps in rural areas
The country's State Council stated that the internet speeds within cities will be nearly 20 megabits per seconds (Mbps) while in the rural areas, internet speeds will be nearly 4Mbps within the next two years.
China may be known for its largest internet access population, but even with all the bloggers and constant personal websites, the country is far from the benchmark when it comes to broadband access. The country will have a lot of catching up to do and many maneuvers to put into motion, as the State Council will have its hands full attempting to create the proper network.
Right now, average fixed broadband speeds sit at 3 Mbps at the first half of this year, according to Broadband Development Alliance, which is a third party research organization.
The State Council's goals have been focused more on getting more individuals online than the actual speeds. Through the end of 2013, nearly 40% of China homes will have some form of fixed broadband, while a quarter of all homes will be able to access a third generation mobile broadband service. China's government thus believes that the overall penetration rate for the service will grow by nearly 50% in the next two years. The government set as a goal to a third of all coverage being through mobile broadband.
In order to build the internet infrastructure, Beijing will be testing opening its society more to the world than ever before... that or cracking down more than ever. Google recently left mainland China in 2010 after Beijing censorship matters became apparent. Google now has offices in Hong Kong, but the market share is low in the country. Baidu is now the largest search engine in the country.
