Obama Funds Expensive Pre-K Program Through Obamacare
Congress may have nixed the Universal Pre-K program on its own, but OBama has added it into the Obamacare bill.
The Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge, according to Politico, is a $500 million dollar state education project, In addition, the The Education and Health and Human Services Departments will fork over almost $89 million to six states with the highest high school dropout rates in the nation for early childhood education programs.
Lisa Guernsey, director of the Early Education Initiative at the New America Foundation said in a statement that Obama’s program is a smart strategy with, unfortunately, limited resources. On the other hand, many experts say it’s a good idea not to fund it, because several analysts have found that kids who went to preschool are no better off than kids who went right into kindergarten by the time they are all in fifth grade.
Obama recently added a preschool specialist to his education team pushing for the early childhood education program. Dr. Libby Doggett, former director of the Pew Home Visiting Campaign will be joining the education department as deputy assistant secretary later this month.
