Understanding of Affiliate Marketing Is Lacking In the UK
Two thirds of businesses that function online in the United Kingdom do not understand affiliate marketing
Seventy-two percent of the businesses surveyed said they need to learn more about it and just 34 percent accurately describe what affiliate marketing was. Of the 516 SMEs that took part in the study, 26 percent said they have an affiliate-marketing program, while 31 percent said they
have consider it. Forty-four percent of the online businesses said the reason they do not have a program in place is that they lack the knowledge. Over half of those businesses that have a program hire an external agency to run things.
“The results are rather similar to what we expected among small to medium business owners, with a lack of knowledge apparent,” said Mark Russell, managing director at Optimus Performance Marketing. He considers the lack of knowledge about the potential benefits of affiliate marketing as a lost income opportunity. “It’s a shame that so many don’t realize the potential benefits of affiliate marketing, especially seeing as though so many of these business owners had an e-commerce element to their company and a transactional website,” Russell said.
