Local Libraries Promote Healthy Eating For Their Community
Michigan Seed Supplier Very Supportive
At most libraries the way the program works is each person is allowed to check out 5 to 6 packets of seeds per month. All summer they work hard to grow the seeds and harvest the vegetables that they produce. Once the vegetables are harvested, some libraries require the seeds to be saved and brought back to the library to replenish their supply for the following year. The hope is that they will continue to have a never ending supply of locally grown seeds to be distributed throughout their community.
Growing locally is very beneficial to individuals and the community as well. Most people would rather be eating vegetables that they know were grown in a garden in their backyard or by another community member. Nobody wants to wonder what kind of herbicides and chemicals were used during the growing process of their vegetables. Todd Snively, President of a national seed company called Todd's Seeds, completely agrees and when interviewed stated, "When I heard about this program, I immediately implemented a library lending seed program for libraries that want to start a seed lending program. This is so beneficial for local communities and I support anything that promotes healthy eating and local gardening." Todd's Seeds offers large varieties of vegetable, flower, and herb seeds that are all chemical free, and many are organic, and are Non-GMO.
Todd's highly discounted program for libraries offers a special start up kit to jump start this program for their community. Mr. Snively also stated, "We get approached all the time to donate to charities, or to get involved in school programs, however, the library program is truly a perpetual way to help the community and solve a major problem.".
The health benefits of eating vegetables you grow in your own garden have been well documented and with heirloom seeds available for free from a local community source, it just might be time to get back to basics and till some earth.
