New Window Blocks out Heat and Light with Switch
Scientists have developed the first “smart window” that functions as a normal window until switched on to keep light, heat and cool out of the house during the extreme seasons.
The team of scientists who created this window, from the U.S. Department of Energy, started the project by creating a special glas coating that responds to electricity to save energy, but realized there were many more benefits to the windows. The windows also allow nightshift workers and young children to sleep soundly during the day without having to resort to dark blinds or covering the windows with dark blankets.
The product isn’t ready for the market yet, but developers are hoping they will be available soon. Right now, it’s believed that the smart windows will only cost about 20 percent more than a conventional window, making it affordable to every day homeowners.
The research was published in the journal Nature, which shows that applying a low voltage causes the crystals to absorb the rays from sun and blocking the heat, but still allowing the window to be see through.
