Loft Claims to be Former Living-Quarters of Basquiat
Will run interested parties up to $650 per night
One would notice, that the art that was hung on the walls was not of the same style and candor of the painter's own angst-filled work. Basquiat gave a darker more directly abrasive quality to his work that is not currently held in the loft itself. In fact, the entire décor looks to be a general antithesis of the artist's own style. The current décor now includes more pleasant depictions that are lending to a stronger calming concept than the painter himself would ever have.
The specific listing, which is currently managed by a man who is part of the Royal Shakespeare Company of the area, describes the room as "THE HIP street in Soho right now" before boasting: "HISTORICAL TID BIT: This was formally Jean Michel Basquiat's artist loft!"
The room runs interested parties as much as $650 per night, and the house rules stated individuals must be “very peaceful people,” and that the loft “is NOT a 'part loft' situation. One MUST be able to walk up 4 flights of stairs. No smoking.” Oddly enough, the space itself has added into the 'amenities section' the classification as “suitable for events,” which apparently means having a quaint tea party for those looking for something of a librarian’s dream get-together.
While Basquiat lived on Crosby Street in the early 1980s, the loft wherein he passed is a few blocks from the listed housing.
