(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 20, 2008 ) Athens – Nicos Petrakopoulos, President and CEO of Mellon Group of Companies, was awarded the Ruban d’ Honneur under the category “Entrepreneur of the Year” of the European Business Awards 2008. Nicos Petrakopoulos received the award during a special ceremony held in Paris on March 11 2008, with the presence of prominent representatives from the political, business and academic European community.

The European Business Awards, a fully independent programme, recognizes and celebrates business excellence across the 27 EU member states. The European Business Awards cover seven categories and this year 7000 applications were received from across Europe. The Ruban d’ Honneur is awarded to the top ten entries of each category, following a thorough assessment of the apposite applications and a personal interview with the European Advisory Panel of senior executives, economists and top academics. Among them, for the Category “Entrepreneur of the Year” were Dr. Christian Vintergaard, Managing Director of Oresund Entrepreneurship Academy -Denmark, Jean-Paul Votron, CEO of Fortis –Belgium, and the former president of Romania, Emil Constantinescu.

For the Category Entrepreneur of the Year, the judges looked for those individuals that best demonstrated exceptional vision and leadership in the establishment and development of an owner-led business, with clear identification of the market opportunity, an innovative approach and evidence of strong financial performance in terms of sales and profit growth.

Apart from Mellon Group of Companies, among the 70 companies that were distinguished with the Ruban d’ Honneur are also Nokia, Tesco, Diageo, Deutcshe Telekom, McDonald’s Europe, TNT Express, BT, Daimler, Petrotechnics and Bank of Cyprus.
