Water, waste, and transportation infrastructure need overhaul
(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 23, 2013 ) Plumstead, UK -- Over 50% of water is lost through leakage within certain local authority areas, due to an inadequate level of maintenance infrastructure, according to a new report published today.
Water leakage has been shown to increase the service costs at least 1% of the pipe network must be replaced every single year, according to the Ireland's infrastructure.
The 24-page report, The State of Ireland 2013, prepared by Irish engineers, looked over five areas of basic infrastructure, including energy, waste, water and flooding, transport, and communications. Each area was graded. No area received an A grade, while transport and water were lowest with Cs. Communications was given a B+, while energy received a B, and waste a B-.
The report has thus called for “unaccounted for water” to be reduced by over 30% within the next half-decade. Installation of domestic water meters within a million homes will begin in July. Furthermore, Phil Hogan, Minister of the Environment, stated that a minimum of 25% of the 1,600 jobs would be given to small local businesses in order to boost the local economy, while more will be given to graduates and apprentices in the respective fields.
The report's authors have criticized the “unprecedented” reduction of funding for transport. “It is unacceptable that there will be no new projects in the short-to-medium term.” They call for a restoration of investment to at least 2012 levels.
The report authors are also concerned about the 42% of waste water that do not meet all water quality standards in the country. It further expressed “significant concern” regarding the presence and prevalence of E.coli in private group water schemes at levels that exceed eight-times the amount within public water supplies.
A particular water management report noted that local authorities need to reconfigure into three distinct regions. It highlighted the 58% of municipal waste heading to landfills.
