Guidance and Support for the Caregiver- Cochran Firm Reports on The National Family Caregiver Support Program
The National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) in partnership with the New Orleans Council on Aging helps caregivers of disabled persons.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 14, 2013 ) The National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) in partnership with the New Orleans Council on Aging has joined forces to provide many different supportive services to family caregivers. It is not rare for a family member to wind up with the unexpected responsibility of caring for a loved one. Whether it is a grandparent raising their grandchildren or a loving person caring for an elder in their family, this new role may come with many unanswered questions and financial concerns. In addition to many others, the following services are provided by the NFCSP:
Caregiver Support Groups – For individuals caring for a disabled or elderly family member, caregiver support groups are held on the second Thursday of each month. These sessions serve as a venue for caregivers to voice problems they may be facing in providing care for their loved one, to learn about community resources and to meet other caregivers.
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) support groups are held on the third Tuesday of each month and can be unimaginably valuable to these caregivers by informing them about available resources and allowing them the opportunity to communicate with other GRGs facing similar circumstances.
Counseling – In addition to the support groups listed above, NFCSP provides individual and family counseling to better equip caregivers with information and resources needed to make informed decisions about their loved ones’ care.
Information and Assistance – The National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) has an in-house case management team that is available to link participants to the most current program and community resources. Outreach workers can also provide home visits to those participants without adequate transportation. Family Caregiver Educational Trainings are offered and provide the caregiver with information on available resources and supportive services. NFCSP also offers multiple forms of tangible assistance, which include:
• In-home Respite – Provides the caregiver with a 4-hour break from their care giving duties.
• Personal Care Assistance – Offers assistance with personal hygiene needs, such as bathing, grooming and using the restroom.
• Material Aid – Allows clients to obtain adult incontinent items, personal hygiene supplies, and nutritional supplements.
Qualifications – To participate in the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP), the person receiving care must reside in Orleans Parish. Only persons 18 years of age or older who are the unpaid caretakers for an elderly loved one (ages 60 and over) or a developmentally-disabled relative requiring daily care (ages 21 and older) can participate.
