Cut to Lawmaker Budget Will Cause Some to Personal Fiscal Belts reports Coldene

184 House members spend over 92% of their budget

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 13, 2013 ) England, U.K -- While members of Congress continue to argue over the spectrum of possible budget cuts from the sequester, spending figures out of the House show that some lawmakers will have an easier time handling a 8.2% cut to the office budgets, while some will need to do some tightening of the belt for the new year.

The official budgets for the various lawmakers cover all things including: personnel, travel, rent communications, utilities, printing fees, supplies, mail, and various equipment.

A new review of the office allowances of 2012 for House member showed that 120 lawmakers spent nearly 95% of their available budgets, demonstrating that a 8.2% cut would force some to make changes in their payments, including staff cuts, furloughs, and reductions within the general expenses.

"We all understand the reality of these reductions," said Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI), who chairs the House Administration Committee, which has been urging lawmakers to heed the warnings about the sequester for several months.

Miller spent nearly 87% of her budget last year, which constitutes nearly $175,000 lower than what she is authorized to spend for her Congressional office. "We have to certainly lead by example," Miller said at a hearing Wednesday that was focused on House committee budgets, which also are shrinking.

Each lawmaker has a varied budget depending up on a series of factors including the distance from the capital and the size of the district, which can make budgeting rather difficult. The budgets allocated tend to stay within the range of $1.1 and $1.4 million

Those lawmakers who spend the most on their budget include Nan Hayworth of New York's 19; Laura Richardson of California 37; Danny Davis of Illinois 7; and Edolphus Towns of NY 10. Each spent 99% or more of their respective alloted budget.

Jeb Hensarling of Texas 5; Rodney Frelinghuysen of New Jersey 11; and Jim Jordan of Ohio 4, spent the least of their total allowance, with less than 70%.
