Perry, who advises Cameron on the sexualization and commercialization of children, took a seven-year hiatus from the position in order to be with her own children. She noted to The Times that she herself has felt rather guilty for often “hovering” over the children when she and they were at home.
Perry notes that mothers subjugate their personal ambitions to their children, whether they mean to or not. With too much assistance, even pointed assistance, many university students can find it hard without the crutch of mother by their side.
She said: “We’ve all done it, now I just can’t so I don’t and I think they’re probably better off as a result.” She continued by stating: “We fetishise cupcakes,” she said. “I like baking but I don’t want to make that my life’s purpose. We worship this feminine motherhood thing and I don’t think our children have benefited actually. They’re babied a lot.”
Perry also adds that parents were quite often afraid to put down the hammer of father/mother knows best when needed, and lay down appropriate punishment for misbehavior.
“Most parents are too busy, don’t know the words, aren’t aware their children are doing it. They are living in digital oblivion,” she stated.
