Flight from Sydney to London on Fuel Alternative reports Roll Off Dumpster Rental

ELP fuel may be future of flight industry

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 09, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Brit pilot Jeremy Roswell is prepared to fly a solo mission from Sydney to London in a Cessna 182 powered solely by a the diesel delivered from “end-of-life” plastic waste. If the trip goes as planned, the endeavor will set a new record time for a journey in a single-engine piston, and represent a compelling argument for the usability of ELP fuel.

The project has been dubbed “On Wings of Waste”, and was conceived after the longtime pilot felt a growing concern about the role the aviation industry played in harming the environment (not to mention general pollution problems). In order to add attention to the practicability of recycled plastic as fuel, Rosewell teamed up with Cynar PLC, a company which converts ELP into synthetic diesel.

Gizmag spoke with Michael Murray, the Cynar CEO, who stated that the company converts ELP destined for landfills into useful diesel. The conversion involves pyrolysis, a process of thermal degradation of material when there is a lack of oxygen. In essence, it is heating without burning.

The ELP is compartmentalized into various gases by the pyrolysis process, and then put through specially-designed condensers which produce an equivalent to the petroleum distillates. That creation is then further treated to create the liquid fuel. Leftover gases are diverted back to the furnaces that will heat the plastics. The entire system is claimed to be more efficient and with a lower sulfur count than generic diesel.

What is left over is a minimal 5% char, which can be put to use building industry for other manufacturing efforts such as concrete and tile.

Each Cynar plant can create up to 19,000 liters of fuel that Rowsell's flight will consume. That constitutes approximately five tons of waste plastic being recycled.

The company's technology is being incorporated into various waste recycling firms worldwide, and enabling companies to convert ELP into diesel for themselves. In addition, Cynar has inked a deal with the UK's Loughborough University in order to further the advance of research on the subject.
