Study Finds Obesity Directly Affect Quality of Life in Teens reports Eu Natural
Boys more affected than girls at preteen years
(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 09, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A recent study has found that being overweight or obese is directly related to a significant reduction of both health and quality of life in boys, yet not in girls.
When compared to normal-weighted peers, a study in the Journal of Adolescent Health noted the divergence in gender results. The study also found that youngsters of either sex who had weight status changes from overweight or obese to normal, saw their quality of life improve overall.
The research took into account over 2,000 Australian schoolchildren who were nearly 12 years of age at the start of the study, which began in 2004. The researchers connected with the children after five years, and utilized a questionnaire in order to assess whether the fact of being overweight and/or obese had any direct effect of the quality of life at the ages of 17 and 18.
Bamini Gopinath, who is a senior research fellow at Westmead Millennium Institute at the University of Sydney in Australia stated, "Adiposity in boys was associated with poorer quality of life during adolescence. This association was not observed among girls. In both boys and girls, though, persistent overweight or obesity was related to poorer physical functioning after the five years. In contrast, weight loss was associated with improved quality of life during adolescence."
The investigators found that both male and female participants who were overweight at the beginning of the study, and who had subsequently lost the weight to fall to normal weight levels, had a higher physical functioning score than males and females who started out in the obese category and remained there for the half-decade stint.
