Presidents mention in State of the Union is a good sign for those in sector
The interest in use of 3D printing may not be apparent to all just yet, but the idea of the technology being used on a regular basis may be here sooner than many thought. Such printers can produce objects by printing thin layers upon layers of plastic, metal, ceramics, and other material. The product that they create is highly customizable.
President Barack Obama cited the nascent technology during his State of the Union address, almost as if everyone already was aware of the technology.
The leader of the free world noted his hope that it was part of the strategy to rejuvenate the U.S. manufacturing sector. "A once-shuttered warehouse is now a state-of-the art lab where new workers are mastering the 3-D printing that has the potential to revolutionize the way we make almost everything," Obama said.
The President has pushed for the new technologies before, often citing the quality of solar and wind power, and calling upon them as remedies for ailment of the world, such as global warming. These earlier calls upon industry came with much blowback, while the look into the 3-D printing realm is much more welcome by both sides of the aisle.
Hod Lipson, who is an associate professor and the director of a Creative Machine Lab at Cornell University, stated, “3D printing is worming its way into almost every industry, from entertainment, to food, to bio- and medical applications."
And while it will not directly create manufacturing jobs in the wide scheme, Lipson, who co-authored “Fabricated: The New World of 3D Printing,” stated that the technology "is not going to simply replace existing manufacturing anytime soon."
Lipson also stated it would open up the door for new business. "The bigger opportunity in the US is that it opens and creates new business models that are based on this idea of customization."
