Pistorious Enters Court to Face Charges reports Watkins Bail Bonds

Olympian's apparent murder of girlfriend source of candid discussion in South Africa

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 27, 2013 ) South Africa -- Millions were stunned when the arrest of 26-year-old Olympic and Paralympic sprinter, Oscar Pistorius, occurred. The sprinter was held in such high regard as a hero for triumphing over the adversity of his own body to compete against able-bodied athletes at the highest level of the sport.

Pistorious' girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was found dead in his home in the early morning of Thursday, with the initial report suggesting Pistorius possibly having mistook her for a burglar.

Since then, police state that Steenkamp was killed by more than just a gunshot, and that Pistorius was the only suspect. There is also a report that the neighbors heard a disturbance prior to the fatal shooting.

The police have stated that there was a 9mm pistol recovered from the house, and that there has been no sign of break in or exterior struggle.

Since the arrest was made, the South African newspapers have published a slew of lurid and unconfirmed details regarding the killing. If any of it is true, they are likely to undermine the potential of the argument for self-defense. Pistorious' agent has claimed they will be disputing the murder charge “in the strongest possible terms”.

Prosecutors are now expected to oppose the request for bail, and suggest they will have to present the court with the state's full version of the shooting as it appears in the charge sheet.

Pistorius arrived at the hour in a police car at 5:00 a.m. GMT and the proceedings were set to start four hours later. There was a chaotic scene outside the jail-house with over 100 journalists jostling to get in the courtroom, which caused the hearing to be delayed.

The case has shed light on more than simply the track star, as there is now a concerted unveiling of the harsh treatment of women in South Africa. The country is still reeling from the gang-rape, mutilation, and murder of a 17-year-old near Cape Town this month. This latest incident appears to be the final tipping point for a concerted effort to talk about the embedded issue.
