The VRS will allow for satellite imagery in land surveying instead of the use of traditional tools.
This is expected to both speed up the time it takes to do a survey job, but also to “maximize accuracy in reading in real time”, according to the chairman and CEO of Spatial Innovision Limited, Silburn Clarke.
When addressing the launch of the virtual reference station, Minister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Robert Pickersgill, stated that the new technology was not only to provide more accurate readings, but to do so at a lower cost.
"At present, persons within the lower socio-economic stratum cannot afford the cost to survey their land for the purpose of registration. In fact, the current system largely benefits land surveyors and lawyers. We aim to change this with the commissioning of gFIX.net," he said.
In addition, Pickersgill stated that he technology will be a useful tool for mapping natural hazards throughout the area, and support disaster management and mitigation activities. He added that tit could be useful in the aid of fighting crime.
"This will enable us to stop second guessing about the areas that are most vulnerable to the effects of natural hazards and to plan accordingly," he said.
"Programs such as Ananda Alert, the Nationwide Child Alert System, and Crime Stop can benefit from … its tracking capabilities," he said.
