Republicans Attempt to Push Through Stronger Rules for Voting Identifications reports Best Name Badges
Both sides of the aisle continue to point fingers in gerrymandering the system
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 27, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A group of Republican-led bills, have tightened identification for voting regulations as well as regulation requirements, have muscled their way through the General Assembly and found their way to the desk of Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell.
Mark Cole's bill is set to eliminate several forms that are, as of now, acceptable for voter ID that were approved a year ago. Utility bills, bank statements, and government checks are all up for removal according to his proposal. The bill was successful in gaining passage almost exclusively on a party line in its House vote.
The measure will not take effect until 2014, as there was a Senate amendment which the house previously accepted.
The measure that is most repugnant to Democrats appears to be the move to have voters present photo identifications at the polls. That passage awaits House voting that could come in short order.
Another bill whose vote comes in short order is Senator Mar Obenshain's bill requires voters registration to be check against federal immigration lists to identify non-citizens.
The house Republicans have been rather open about advancing such rules while rejecting legislation that will lower other obstacles to voting as well as reduce waiting lines up to four hours. Among such rules was the Democratic and Republican bills that were to expand no-excuses absentee voting for those over 65 years old. The rule set would have allowed them to cast ballots prior to election day in order to reduce the number of elderly voters that were waiting in lines to vote.
Election officials have pushed for the change to reduce number of elderly voters, which they claim is an obvious cause of the slowing of overall voting speed. Both Democrats and Republicans accuse one another of attempting to legislatively rig the system to favor the side, while both side have had a historical history of doing just that from time-to-time.
