Sky Strikes Deal with Disney for Exclusivity Rights to Movies reports Alluc
Now has deals with four of the six major studios
Sky Movies Disney is set to launch in late march, and will be the newest addition to the Sky pay-TV full-length film lineup. The channel will be replacing Disney Cinemagic.
There will be other animated titles from Disney and Pixar, which include the Tinker Bell series and the Oz: The Great and Powerful, Monsters University, and The Lone Ranger, all of which are straight-to-DVD releases.
The deal has now given Sky access to Disney films for its video on demand services like Sky Go, Now TV, and OnDemand.
Sky would not yet reveal the length of the deal with Disney; however, in the face of the increased competition for Hollywood movies that come straight from the US VOD service Netflix, launched in 2012, Sky now has a new exclusive pay-TV deal with four of the six largest studios.
As part of the overall deal, the Sky Movies channel will have the UK TV premieres of releases by both Lucas Films and Marvel. That will mean that sky is given a chance to premiere movies such as the Avengers Assemble and Iron Man 3, as well as the Star Wars series.
Sky Movies Disney will also become the standard home for timeless classics such as Bambi, Pinocchio, Pixar animation, as well as newer classic like Finding Nemo and Cars.
Ian Lewis, Director of Sky Movies made a statement regarding the deal: "Disney's movies are loved by all ages and generations, so we're delighted to be bringing this new channel to millions of families at no extra cost. Sky Movies Disney will be the home of new and classic Disney and Disney/Pixar movies and will offer all new titles at least a year before other TV channels or subscription services.
