Compound Found in Minnesota Lakes Could Be Problematic reports Pure Lifestyle Wonders
Researches still looking into effects of triclosan
The ingredient is used in soaps, toothpastes, and even over-the-counter drugs, and has now been noted in the lakes by researchers who are studying the sediment cores from the bottoms of eight different lakes. The researchers have noted that sediment cores from the bottom of eight separate lakes all had increased levels of triclosan and byproducts of the compound, and that the amount had been increasing.
When individuals use shampoos, toothpaste, or soaps that contain the compound, it is washed into trans. Treatment plants are unable to remove all of the triclosan, and as a result, it can end up in the water deposits and lakes.
Triclosan can attach itself to sediment and accumulate over time, and potentially pose a risk to the aquatic organisms in the area. When waters becoming contaminated and are exposed to sunlight, toxic byproducts can be released. Of these released byproduct, four are known carcinogens. Research is currently ongoing regarding the effects and detriment of the byproduct.
There is no conclusive evidence on the total long-term impacts of triclosan in the water system, although existing data does note some troubling concerns; including a report from the Center for disease prevention. In 2008, the center released findings that triclosan is present in the urine of 75% of all United States residents. Multiple studies have also noted that triclosan can alter hormone levels, which can mean decreased thyroid function, as well as certain cancer growth.
While triclosan in drinking water is not the lone pathway for exposure, it is potentially the most prevalent way for the compound to enter the system.
