Valentines Day and Weddings, plus affordable prices prompt sales spike

"There's a 50% increase in the demand for diamond jewelry this month. And with V-Day tomorrow, we're expecting the sales to increase further. It is a new trend here of youngsters gifting diamonds to their partners on V-Day," says Kamlesh Burad, owner of a jewelry store. "The demand for diamonds has definitely risen because of V-Day. There are numerous couples coming to our shop to select the best piece of jewelry," says Manish Sharma, owner of another jewelery shop at Sadar Bazar.
There are also many weddings that are taking place during the late-winter and spring season, which have added to the sales of diamond jewelry. "There're a lot of shaadis happening this month, which can also be attributed to the sharp rise in the sales of diamond jewelry. In the last two-three days, we've had numerous customers asking for lightweight diamond jewelry for gifting," says Nirmal Lunia, who deals in diamond jewelry.
It is not only Valentine's Day that spurred the interest in popularity of the diamonds. The more affordable prices as of late have helped the jewels gain larger interest overall.
"Diamonds are more affordable now because of its nominal pricing. A diamond ring starts from `10,000, which makes it popular among lovers. We have experienced a huge rush of people asking for diamond jewellery in the last few days," says Nirmal.
"I have been saving for the last one year to buy a diamond ring for my wife. I had already chosen the ring for her and will gift it to her tomorrow," says Ashutosh Shekhawat, an engineer.
