Ministers Reveal Shocking Anti-Smoking Photographs reports Product Photography Toronto
Maneuver is to deter interest in the habit
The graphic images will now accompany standard warnings that are placed upon tobacco products that are sold in shops, starting on February 1.
The Minister of Health, James Reilly, has stated that he is hoping the pictures will shock smokers into quitting, and help prevent younger potential consumers to avoid taking up the habit.
“Half, or one in two, of all long-term smokers will die from smoking related diseases,” he warned. “This is a stark statistic. There is no doubt that if tobacco were discovered today, knowing what we know about its lethal effects, it would not be a legal product.”
The Minister was joined with the Minister of Children, Frances Fitzgerald, as well as Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan, as they launched the new regulation.
All tobacco products that are placed into the market after the February date are now required to carry the warnings. The requirement is added to the existing legislative measures that are attempting to quell interest in smoking. Other laws have been past to assist in the effort since 2009.
There are images of the shocking possible effects of long-term and extensive smoking use. Other images will include graphic warnings that will help deter interest, according to the ministry.
The World Health Organization has revealed that the introduction of images on the packs that were sold in Canada to help those who wish to quit have a visual image of what they will be avoiding was successful. Smoker who intended to quit prior to seeing the images were more likely to pull the trigger on the quitting process.
“We should never lose sight of the detrimental impact that smoking has on our society,” Dr Holohan said. “It remains the greatest single cause of preventable illness and premature death in Ireland, killing over 5,200 people a year.”
