Many Still Do Not Have Septic Tanks Registered reports Lapin Services
Some admit they have no intention of doing so
The Department of the Environment has confirmed that the latest figures note nearly 300,000 registrations have been processed, which leaves 10,00 written applications still under consideration. Septic tank owners have to register their system by Friday or face likely fines that could be as high as 5,000.
The 2011 Census noted that 497,000 domestic wastewater treatment system across the country; However, just 61% of the septic-tank owners have thus far agreed to pay for the registration fee.
According to a spokesperson for the Department of Environment stated that the Local Government Management Agency reported a high return increase in online registration over the past several days.
Phil Hogan, who sites as Environment Minister, introduced a temporary charge of 5, which is to get people registered. The remainder who failed to do so were left to pay 50 per waste water system by Friday.
Hogan introduced the incentive last month, with those who successfully registered being able to apply for a grant worth 4,000 to upgrade their systems if noted as needed. The minister added that the grants would be allocated to householders whose systems were inspected by the local authorities and founded needing direct improvements.
The septic tank registration certificate that is received after inspection is valid for a half-decade. Re-registration is necessary following the five years, as the first registration is intended primarily to identify the ownership and location of the domestic treatment system.
Jim Connolly of Rural Resettlement Ireland in Kilbaha stated that he had no intention of paying for the registration.
"The whole thing is ridiculous," he told the Irish Independent. "My main objection is that the grants will be means-tested and it is another layer of bureaucracy.
This will be like the fiasco of people trying to apply for grants for third-level fees, he asserted, adding What it really boils down to is more work for bureaucrats in local authorities.
"The registration only holds for five years what is the point? It opens the door for more charges in five years' time."
