Delhi's Air Pollution Becoming Highly Dangerous reports Vape Forest
Can no longer claim to be consistently better than Beijing
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 11, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Residents within the capital city of India, who thought they were have dealt with their air-pollution problems over a decade ago, are once again having to choke down the unfortunate truth that the exhaust fumes and dust are helping the city remaining one of the dirtiest when it comes to the air quality.
Scientists have let the city know that it is gaining a dangerously poor mark following its three “extreme” air pollution warnings that showed that Delhi could no longer boast that it was seeing consistently cleaner air than Beijing, another one of the world's worst when it comes to air quality.
The poor air quality is a problem for urbanites across the Asian territories, whether living within wealthy cities such as Hong Kong, or within poorer areas such as Manila. An OECD report form 2012 stated that the air pollution was set to become some of the worst environmental cause of death in the area if no action was taken to curtail the obvious threat.
“By 2050, the number of premature deaths from exposure to particulate matter is projected to more than double to reach 3.6m a year globally, with most deaths occurring in China and India,” it said.
The residents of Delhi had been the recipients of good news for the past handful of years, as pollutants fell sharply when the state of Delhi switched buses and taxis from diesel to compressed natural gas, which is a cleaner fuel. The are also built more metro lines and moved factories away from city centers.
But today, the progress is being reversed with nearly 1,400 cars being added to the 6.5 million that already exist on the streets. Anumita Roychowdhury, an executive director for the center for Science and Environment, a non-government group, stated that vehicles are responsible for over two-thirds of the “cocktail of deadly pollutant” that people breath in.
“Since 2006, the air pollution data out there is very clear,” she says. “It’s showing that the pollution levels are rising now, steadily, consistently, and they have gone up much beyond pre-CNG days. That’s the most scary part.”
