N. Ireland ‘Peace Walls’ May Come Down in Decade reports JP Concrete

Office hopes there can finally be a bridging of communities in 2022

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 31, 2013 ) East Sussex, U.K -- The walls that separate the communities of Northern Ireland, poorly named as the 'peace walls' should be down by the year 2022, according to a recently released Government draft.

The removal of the walls will be included in the documents, as of now, as part of a cross-party movement by the Stormont group regarding the necessary cohesion of the opposing parties.

According to the recent reports, the draft from November has outlined the removal of the 59 peace walls used to divide the Catholic and Protestant communities that are located in the Belfast, Londonderry, and Craigavon areas.

Both Alliance and Ulster Unionist parties have each left the Stormonth working group, as unrest continues between the sides.

The unreleased draft document leaked to the BBC has acknowledged that the safety concerns of the people would remain a critical concern. While it is known that the change cannot happen quickly, the overall consideration for some form of progress in the workings of both sides is a goal of the early drafts.

“We believe that, together with people in the local community, we can reduce the number of physical interface structures with a view to their elimination by 2022.”

The document also took note of areas of concern regarding the shared integration of both sides, including concepts of segregated housing, parades, and Equality Commission.

Both the First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy FM Martin McGuinness had been hoping to reveal an agreed proposal set before Christmas; however, that was simply not to be.

In a statement recently released by the Office of the First and Deputy First Ministers: “This is a draft document, it is therefore incomplete and remains a work in progress. We are disappointed that it has been leaked.”
