New Dry-Eye Treatment Being Touted as Successful reports Can-C
Can work for 8-15 months according to doctor
(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 24, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- For those who suffer from dry eyes, there is new hope with a complex mixture of water, fatty oils, and mucus.
While that may not sound appealing to all, for those who suffer from a lack of adequate tear distribution to their eyes, the mixture is sure to be seen as a blessing.
The standard treatment for chronic dry eye disease involves medications, daily eye drops, and ointments to help facilitate wetness to the eye. Now, a new option has emerged to help those with dry eyes in a matter of minutes.
One such sufferer of dry eye diseases is Diana Galson-Kooy.
"I felt like I had a piece of glass in my eye," she said. "I've kind of gotten used to the pain."
The dry eye disease is brought on by things like prolonged contact lens use, birth control, anti-histamines, and even simply staring at a screen. Evaporative dry eye affects the glands that make up tears, causing the eyes to easily become irritated due to lack of tear formation.
"Her tears that she's making are leaving her eyes much quicker than they should be," said Dr. Ernest Kornmehl.
According to Kornehl, like Galson-Kooy, many of the patients he sees are now given the recommendation for LipiFlow.
"It takes 12 minutes and patients go to work immediately after the procedure," said Kornmehl.
There are cups that surround the eyelids, and these cups heat up the pulsate to melt blockages in the tear glands. Galson-Kooy stated that the treatment is pain-free, but does carry with it a “strange” feeling.
In the trial studies held by the FDA, 79% of LipiFlow users showed marked improvement. Doctors stated that the improvements can last nine to 15 months when treatment is successful.
"They find themselves not taking the drops or ointments as they were before," said Kornmehl.
