IoD Advises More Runway and Capacity Needed for British Airports reports Chigwell Cars
Opponents say airports can handle far larger demand
(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 18, 2013 ) Essex, U.K -- The Institute of Directors gathered a report that states that the Heathrow airport needs to have one more runway (minimum) and that there should be a second runway built at the Gatwick airport.
The news comes as Sir Howard Davis begins to work on the government-commissioned that pertains to air travel provisions within the United Kingdom.
That investigation and report will unfortunately not be seen until 2015. The IoD has said that the planning permission for expanding Gatwick should be handled in short order, and that way can allow them to be prepared for when restrictions for building are lifted.
The business lobby for the group also stated that Air Passenger Duty, which are fees levied via taxes, that British passengers must handle on departures from the United Kingdom airports are “much too high”.
The lobby group points out that 27 European Union Members countries have taxes just like the APD.
The current rate of the APD for those departing United Kingdom airports ranges from $17-200. Those fees depend directly on the distance traveled and the class in which one is flying in.
Within the survey taken by the IoD, 49% who responded noted that a lack of spare capacity at Heathrow was damaging investment.
The IoD stated that the country has a capacity for 372 million passengers per year, and that number well exceeds the total of passengers 2010 (which was the last hard number available).
It has stated that the five airports in the section of the country are able to handle 181 million passengers on a yearly basis.
The Department of Transport has estimated that by 2030 the demand for airports will be 204 million, and will rise to 294 million by 2050.
Simon Burns, who sits as Aviation Minister, stated that the government is taking the issue very seriously, stating, "We know that to stay ahead we need to plan for the future and build a strong political consensus, which is why we have asked Sir Howard Davies to conduct a detailed, independent review of all the options for maintaining our connectivity.
"By the end of next year he will have delivered a shortlist of credible proposals as well as identifying ways in which we can make even better use of the capacity which already exists."
