Blake Irving Announced as New GoDaddy CEO reports Hosting Coupons 4U

To take over the reigns in early January

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 12, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- GoDaddy, the domain registration and hosting company that holds over 11 million users and 50 million-plus domain registrations under its wing, is announcing a new CEO, Blake Irving.

Irving's most recent role coming into the job was being Chief Product Officer at Yahoo. He left Yahoo in early 2012, which was before Marissa Mayer and near the time that 2,000 product workers were laid off by the company. Irving will formally take up the position on January 7, 2013.

Before GoDaddy, Irving had been with Microsoft, where he held varying rolls over the 15 years of his work. His highest-profile position with the company was as VP of Windows Live.

GoDaddy has been through large changes in recent years, and without a permanent CEO. Prior to Irving's naming, Scott Wagner, a GoDaddy shareholder/part owner KKR, had been serving as an interim CEO since July 2012. KKR, along with the investor group that included Silver Lake Partners and Technology Crossover Ventures became the owner of GoDaddy in 2011 for a $2.25 billion figure.

Godaddy was once preparing to go public in 2006, but has experienced tremendous ups and downs. The company was one of the biggest players in the domain registration and management services, then falling to controversial stories about their founder, and also experienced major site outages.

Most recently, the company had been slowly reinventing its image in order to focus on more enhanced services and products, which it offers to its customers. Such customers are mainly small and medium business enterprises, on top of its basic role as a domain registration and hosting service.

Irving's experience at Yahoo and Microsoft should be a winning quality with the need for GoDaddy to reinvent in this way. The shift toward product and services has taken GoDaddy in many different directions. One of which is moving into the mobile sector.

The strategy shift is the reason for GoDaddy's first acquisition earlier in the year, wherein the company absorbed service company Outright.
