Americans Continue to Play Most Video Games Per Capita Reports Animal Jam Codes
Adults Play Almost as much as Youngsters, Study Shows
Higher numbers of game developer have shifted their efforts away from brick-and-mortar sales fronts and have doubled down on last year’s switch to downloadable games and other content, but, despite the change, sales remain strong according to the Entertainment Software Association.
The ESA’s number show that Americans spent just-under $25 billion on games, consoles and accessories in 2011 and make up the largest section of worldwide gaming market. A similar set of number by Game Track show that US gamers spend more of their time and money gaming than populations in any other country. The 6,000 person study found that almost 70% of Americans play video games, compared to 50% of French citizens and slightly-above 30% of German and UK citizens.
The significant jump seems to come from the fact that more adults, as well as children, game in the US. The study looked at what types of games were played by different age groups. The study found that just over 20% of children under 18 play packaged (store-bought), online as well as mobile games, while a similar number of adults over 18, just under 20%, play all three types as well.
Gamers cannot be easily defined by age, at least in the United States. The evidence suggests that Americans may make up so much of the global gaming market because they are not simply buying games for younger Americans, as the ‘games are for kids’ stereotype may suggest, but that they are buying them for their themselves.
