Malaysia Seeks Benefits of Indian Infrastructure Projects reports SL Info
Monorail, road, and airline projects peak Malaysian business interests
Scomi, a monorail service company that is based in Malaysia, has executed the first of several projects in Mumbai and is currently conducting talks with other cities including Kolkata. The talks are to explore potential of offers it can service, according to Mustapa Mohamed, Minister for International Trade and Industries.
During the most recent meeting in Hyderabad, the delegation interacted with various companies for the potential areas of cooperation that could arise, stating that there is opportunity for immense expansion within the trade ties between the countries.
"A Malaysian company has set up MRO facilities in partnership with GMR in Hyderabad and is set to expand its presence serving the aviation sector. The MRO operations in Malaysia are rated the third biggest in the world. The growing opportunity in India will offer immense scope to expand business," the Minister said.
Scomi has done very well for itself, nabbing two of three monorail projects in Brazil, wherein overhaul is being done in order to accommodate the 2014 World Cup. It was outbid by Bombardier for the third project.
Malaysian companies are enjoying the partnership with Indian companies in a joint effort to develop massive road networks across the country. With the government of India attempting to develop over 20 km of road per day, there are a wide range of opportunities for the countries to collaborate.
When asked of the chances regarding Proton car reviving its troubles with India, the Minister stated that its ownership had changed. The company had been a state-run and management had been turned over by a private company.
"Large companies like Reliance and Ballarpur have made acquisitions in Malaysia. We are open to investment opportunities in Indian companies. However, we believe small and medium sized industries have immense opportunities to use Malaysia as a base for business in Asean," he said.
