Crewmember Parishes on Distressed Boat reports Care Master Clean
11 other crewmembers survive
The Vos Sailor was heavily damaged as it took on water during a severe storm that lasted overnight. Coastguards were launched on a rescue mission after a 4:30 am mayday was received. There were 11 members who were rescued from the waters, but one was not.
Police state that the man was fatally injured and his body has not yet been recovered.
Simultaneously, there was a rescue mission that was underway in Sunderland after 15 men were knocked off their feet by crashing waves that rocked Roker Pier.
The men were said to be fishing on a pier, and one of the 15, who was in his 60s according to reports, was burdened with a broken leg from the incident. The man was winched off the pier by a helicopter, which took him to the hospital in Newcastle. Auxiliary rescue members evacuated the remaining men through a tunnel underneath the pier.
The North Sea vessel is still out at sea, and it appears emergency vessels must leave the unit for now.
“It appears at this time that one crew member has suffered fatal injuries,” a Grampian Police spokesman said.
“Next of kin have been informed of this situation although no details can be confirmed at this time. Efforts are ongoing to recover the vessel which will be brought in to Aberdeen harbor in due course.
“As is normal in such circumstances a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
The vessel had sustained rather significant damage, and was disabled while it was 120 miles north of Aberdeen. Six vessels as well as three helicopters were sent to the scene. One of the helicopters on the scene was the RAP helicopter from Lossiemouth and Bond 1, the BP Jigsaw helicopter.
