Taiwan Rebranding Itself a Romance Tourist Destination reports Taiwan Singles
Country’s tourism division targeting singles with pilot program
Although Taiwan is often thought of as a premiere destination for weddings and honeymoons, the tourism bureau’s International Travel Division wants reach out to single adults of all nations.
"We want to explore every opportunity to make Taiwan 'romantic,'" section chief of the International Travel Division, Cheng Yi-ping, said.
The first step of this transformation will take place on Nov. 24-25, when a pilot program is launched. Approximately 100 single foreign tourists, aged 20 and older, will be randomly selected and put into smaller groups as they tour the picturesque townships in southern Taiwan.
The travel division is using the popular Japanese reality show, “Ainori” (which means “love ride” in English) as the basis for the program. The how tracks emerging romances between strangers as they travel through foreign lands while on the same bus.
Cheng noted that the assigned groups will have the opportunity to visit four temples that are dedicated to the “old man of the moonlight,” thought by many to be the god of marriage and love.
Surprise events are also scheduled along the way for the tourists, who are mainly represented by Japan, Malaysia, and South Korea.
The response received so far has been positive, according to Cheng. "You can tell from the fact that we have received inquiries from gay people and a mother-daughter duo."
The tourism board is hopeful that, even if no romance buds while on the excursions, the campaign will still have the effect of enhancing Taiwan’s reputation as both a fun and romantic tourism spot.
The board also hopes that the program will also create a loyal group of return visitors who have developed strong bonds with the nation and the people they meet there.
