Early Winter Freeze Creating Problems for Farmers in Canada and Northern U.S.

Heat-Line, a manufacturer of water freeze protection systems, offers innovative solutions to farmers who are looking for ways to effectively manage livestock throughout the freezing winter months.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 14, 2007 ) Carnarvon Ontario -- Heat-Line, a manufacturer of water freeze protection systems, offers innovative solutions to farmers who are looking for ways to effectively manage livestock throughout the freezing winter months.

Winter has arrived in Northern America with a vengeance. It has come early, and it has come hard with below seasonal temperatures and plenty of snow. All reports, including those from Environment Canada, indicate that the cold and snowy weather will continue through the long winter season ahead. The Farmers Almanac predicts that the winter of 2007/2008 will be “a colder than normal winter with a greater average complement of precipitation.”

While this is welcome news for winter sports enthusiasts and those businesses that depend on a cold snowy winter, many farmers in Canada and in the northern states may be less than thrilled. For farmers with livestock, winter presents a variety of problems. The biggest problem that farmers face in the cold winter months is the affect that low winter temperatures and snow have on their livestock. It’s kind of double jeopardy as livestock come off free range grazing early due to heavy snow and the lower temperatures put a quick end to livestock water supplies.

In order to remain healthy, livestock must have constant access to clean unfrozen water. Optimally, water for livestock should be between 40 and 65 degrees F. Additionally, livestock must consume large quantities of water to properly process their feed. Unfortunately, many farmers experience an inadequate water supply during the winter months that can adversely affect a farm animal’s general health, feed intake, meat and milk production, and ultimately the animal’s profitability. With colder winter temperatures, farmers are dealing with frozen waterlines, pipes freezing, and frozen water troughs.

Fortunately, Heat-Line, (http://www.heatline.com), an Ontario based company, has made new products available to ensure livestock water supplies offer farmers a practical alternative to the labour intensive solutions of the past - like trucking in water every day or draining and recharging waterlines in the barn. Rather, Heat-Line designs and manufactures a variety of water pipe freeze protection systems using innovative conductive-polymer heating cable technology. This company appreciates the farmer’s need for a totally reliable water supply for their livestock, even in severely cold climates.

Lorne Heise, President & CEO of Heat-Line states that, “Heat-Line has a number of freeze protection systems that are particularly applicable for the farm, ranch, stable or any other agricultural setting. From heating cables for drinking bowls for use in the barn or stable to feedlot water heating applications from any source, Heat-Line offers a number of water heating systems that are not only reliable, but are energy efficient as well. We understand the importance of having a secure and dependable water supply on the farm. Our products are unrivalled for performance, energy efficiency and reliability and offer farmers real peace of mind.”

Farmers have a lot to worry about. In some areas, snowfall has been greater in the first week of December than the entire snowfall of the previous winter. Below normal cold temperatures have set in with no signs of letting up. Essentially, we are getting an extra month of winter in comparison to the last number of years. Innovative solutions for managing winter livestock such as Heat-Line freeze protection systems mean that the farmer has one less thing to worry about.

Heat-Line specializes in developing and manufacturing the most advanced water pipe freeze protection systems using self-regulating technology. For more information on Heat-Line’s products, please visit http://www.heatline.com or call Lorne Heise at 1-800-584-4944.
